FOOD CRISIS - ALERT - Winter 2011-2012
The level of need in our community has been tremendous, and a record 600 households could not be helped by Holiday Baskets this December. The Jewish Community Foundation (JCF) stepped in to help CRC provide food to those families, and offered CRC a donor match pool of up to $7,000. In just under two days, we reached our goal of $36,000 for a special winter food distribution for families in need in our community!
Thank you to our CRC supporters for the tremendous response to our appeal, which officially ended at 1:00 on December 30th after we confirmed the end of the match pool funds!
The JCF match is no longer available, but your donation can still make a critical difference without that match. Click on the FOOD donation box to the right to make an online donation in support of food programs throughout the year.
We are actively seeking donations of non-perishable food or cash donations online or by check to support our efforts. CRC provides year-round food assistance to families in crisis, so if you missed our Holiday Baskets distribution, it's not too late to help.

Providing Food Security
In 2011, CRC's Client Center increased program capacity to provide 300 household distributions weekly, and on any given day still has an estimated 100 households on the waiting list for the program. Despite food supply shortfalls in 2011, CRC's Holiday Baskets program distributed over 45 tons of food to nearly 1,600 households in December, making the 2011 distribution the largest in the history of the 29-year program. Sadly, a record 600 families who requested help from Holiday Baskets were turned away after registration finally closed.
Food Programs: Emergency Food Pantry, distribution of staple foods (including nutritious perishables through Feeding America), USDA Commodities programs, Client Center Program, and Holiday Baskets distribution.
Client Center Program
This is an innovative six-month intensive program that offers case management to local households in crisis. Participants establish self-sufficiency goals with their case managers, and also learn about essential nutrition, budgeting and life skills.
Households in this program receive a monthly allotment of points to obtain food (including nutritious perishables through Feeding America) and household essentials. The bi-weekly case management program has an intensive focus on 1) life skills, employment preparation, and financial education, 2) benefits enrollment, and 3) education classes, English classes and other trainings that may increase client stability.
Annual Holiday Baskets Program
This program is the largest distribution of its kind in San Diego County, and provides families in need with staple foods and household essentials. The program now serves 1,600 households (approx. 7,000 individuals).
